Chelsea beat Manchester United and pile pressure on Carrick

Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, 31 October, in one of the headline games of Premier League matchweek 9. The result strengthens the London club's grip on a European place and deepens United's troubles.

How the game went

The first half finished goalless. Chelsea broke through soon after the restart, with Morgan Rogers scoring in the 50th minute. In the 64th minute, Cole Palmer converted a penalty to make it 2-0, and United could not find a reply.

Chelsea in the leading pack

The win takes Chelsea to 16 points and 4th place, the last spot that leads directly to the Champions League. They are three points behind Brighton and eight behind leaders Arsenal.

Pressure on Michael Carrick

For Manchester United, the defeat increases the pressure on manager Michael Carrick. English media, including ESPN and Sky Sports, highlighted after the game that he is going through a difficult spell, although Carrick has indicated he expects to stay in the job. United sit outside the top nine.

Another manager under strain

United are not the only club with problems. Nottingham Forest lost 2-0 at Brentford, to a Nikola Milenković own goal and an Igor Thiago strike, and English media also report growing pressure on manager Oliver Glasner. So far, neither club has announced any change in the dugout.
